What Are the Benefits of Signing with Multiples?

If you are blessed with a large family – or even twins and trips – life is a handful. By introducing baby signing to your brood, there are also a handful of opportunities to make life easier.

Take advantage of idioglossia: A viral YouTube video of two twins speaking in “twin talk” has brought the term “idioglossia,” the secret language spoken between children, to public awareness. Other than the utter adorability factor, there are also very pragmatic reasons to encourage your kids to sign with each other – and you.

Reverse “twin speech delay”: Surprisingly, research shows that language development in twins or multiples (especially boys) is often delayed. One reason is that one twin may talk for the other, and another is that parents are doubly fatigued (leading to less one-on-one dialogue). Good news: baby signing stimulates the brain’s language centers that can help accelerate speech fluency in hearing children.

Take the guesswork out of your child’s needs: Remember these sleepless nights guesstimating the source of tears – colic, hunger or poopy diaper? Imagine if you had to simultaneously meet the needs of two children. Then, imagine how signing can reduce your frustration two-fold. Net result: Fewer tears, more teamwork and a lot less time wasted.

The most fun reason? Multiple kids equal multiple practice partners for this unique, creative language!
