Visually Speaking believes ASL interpreters should be compensated and supported for their expertise in the field of activism. We ALL need to do the work to support and encourage those who provide access to the community.
There are several reasons why people should donate to BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) sign language interpreters:
- Equity and representation: BIPOC sign language interpreters can provide representation and support for members of their communities who use sign language. This can be particularly important for deaf and hard of hearing individuals who may not have had as many opportunities to see themselves represented in the sign language interpreting profession.
- Cultural competency: BIPOC sign language interpreters may have a deeper understanding of the cultural and linguistic needs of their communities, and may be better equipped to provide accurate and respectful interpretation in a variety of settings.
- Access to resources: Many BIPOC sign language interpreters may not have access to the same resources and opportunities as their non-BIPOC counterparts, and donations can help provide financial support and resources to help them succeed in their careers.
Overall, supporting BIPOC sign language interpreters can help promote equity and inclusivity in the interpreting profession, and ensure that deaf and hard of hearing individuals have access to accurate and respectful interpretation.
